TAKING YOUR UNDERSTANDING OF REGULATION TO A DEEPER LEVEL WITH CONSULTANT OCCUPATIONAL THERAPIST AND GUEST SPEAKER ÉADAOIN BHREATHNACH Parenting children with trauma histories leaves adoptive parents at risk of secondary trauma. Our children need love and empathy but giving it to a rejecting, reactive, or avoidant child leaves us vulnerable to internalising some of their pain. Over time, it’s easy to become exhausted and shut down – we all need time to recover. But, how do we find that time? The trick is to embed regulation into everyday activities such as meal times, personal care, going to the shops, etc. Knowing which foods and activities up-regulate and which down-regulate the nervous system helps us to choose the best strategies for self- care. This workshop explores how we can use all these ideas so when the brain is exposed to this type of little- and-often regulation, it reduces overall stress levels and increases our capacity to recover from setbacks.
