Understanding the health system better
Understanding the health system better
The health system can often be confusing when trying to find support for your child. The following are some useful information and resources to help you navigate.
EXPERT PARENT PROGRAMME
The aim of the Expert Parent Programme is to help parents understand the health system better and benefit more from the services their children use. Parents will acquire skills and knowledge to navigate and manage the health system for their child, empowering them to make it work more effectively.
The Expert Parent Programme is a workshop for parents and carers of disabled children and young people delivered by parents (Council for Disabled Children approved trained) ; this is peer-to-peer support.
What we do
The programme is in three parts: an interactive face-to-face workshop, on-line learning modules and many learning resources. The workshop covers person-centred approaches, parents' unique knowledge of their child and outcomes in detail.
Also covered is understanding the health system, who's who and how they help, needs versus rights, working effectively with professionals and getting the most out of the health system. How to give feedback or complain, and build effective partnerships.
We currently offer two different workshops. A workshop focusing specifically on mental health and CAMHS professionals as well as a workshop for understanding working with general health professionals in the NHS.
This programme was developed by parent carers and NHS England professionals working together. The national programme is run by CDC and delivered locally by Rachel Froggatt & Grainne Saunders, parent carers interested in Health & Social Care.
We deliver workshops free to parents throughout West Sussex on a rolling programme through the West Sussex Parent Carer Forum. However, we are always happy to deliver a bespoke workshop to suit you - please contact us.

PATIENT KNOWS BEST(View your health records online)
Patients with outpatient appointments at Western Sussex Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust now receive their appointment and follow-up letters digitally with Patients Know Best.
Eventually, patients will see their pathology results and teams will also carry out virtual clinics and schedule appointments. Additionally, the trust is using the system to add demographic updates, information about A&E / inpatient attendances and multi-disciplinary meetings.
