Positive Placements YMCA DLG

Service

YMCA Positive Placements supports vulnerable, disadvantaged NEET (not in education, employment or training) young people 16-25 years old who live in the local community to obtain education, employment or training. This is achieved by recruiting and training volunteer mentors from the local community who are matched with a young person (mentee) to support them on their journey towards education, training or employment.

What we do:

  • Positive Placements is part of YMCA DownsLink Group and the project supports vulnerable young people to get back into employment, education or training through a mentoring scheme where they have guidance to set and achieve goals for up to one year.
  • YMCA DownsLink Group is a charity and registered housing provider working across Surrey and Sussex, which has been serving the local community since 1919. Each year we support over 10,000 children, young people and families.
  • Volunteer mentors come from a wide range of relevant backgrounds e.g. social work, teaching or business, and can offer mentees a dedicated, knowledgeable and supportive hand to enable them to reach their goals. Mentors have thorough training and checks.
  • The project coordinator supports local employers to help them deliver work experience, volunteering placements and apprenticeships to increase the supply of suitable opportunities to meet demand.
  • The project coordinator invests time and resources to ensure that employers are able to understand and support vulnerable young people, many of whom have very little experience in a work environment.

Our users say:

I can’t even say how much my mentor and Positive Placements has helped me. Before I joined the project I didn’t know where to turn. He has never put pressure on me but has supported me, given me hope and the self-belief that I can achieve my goals.
