Animal Connections - Alternative Provision

Service

Animal Connections is an animal assisted education service based just north of Arundel. We provide individualised, one to one learning for children and young people that might currently need an alternative to mainstream education.

With the help of our range of friendly and amenable small animals, we are able to deliver learning sessions that are fun, engaging and interactive whilst developing confidence and promoting self-esteem.

What we do:

  • Working with our ferrets, rabbits, guinea pigs, chickens, tortoise, rats, hamster and skinny pigs and occasionally our friendly house dog, we aim to provide an interesting and interactive program of learning leading to ASDAN accredited awards.
  • Sessions can be one hour or two hours and are planned in accordance with the views and choices of the child or young person and in collaboration with parents or carers and involved multi agency persons.
  • Staff are qualified education and social care professionals with experience of working with children, young people and younger adults with special educational needs, learning disabilities & those that may struggle in mainstream education.
  • A full enhanced DBS certificate is held by all those working in the service and full public liability and professional indemnity insurance is held.
  • The site is wheelchair friendly however adaptations may need to be made in poor weather. If you would like more information on our service or to make a referral please give Nikki a call for an informal discussion on what we are able to offer.

My son had been out of school for just under a year and was starting to refuse to engage in anything. His anxiety made it difficult for him to leave the house and I was becoming increasingly worried for his mental health. I found animal connections through the local offer page and suggested it to my son. Animals make him feel calm and ease his anxiety. After we went and met Nicky and her animals he agreed to start having some sessions with her. The change that it made to him was fantastic. He started looking forward to leaving the house and he enjoyed working with all the animals. It helped build back his self esteem and confidence and he learned lots along the way. I can’t recommend Nicky enough. She is patient and kind and works at the pace of the child. On a few occasions when my son was struggling with his anxiety and refused to leave the car, Nicky suggested alternative activities based on her knowledge of him and it worked. His last session was today, and he said to his sister in the car “you can trust Nicky she will always keep you safe with the animals”. Coming from a boy that doesn’t trust many adults/teachers after a bad experience in education, I felt this was this biggest compliment he could have finished with and reminded me just how much she had helped him. Thank you Nicky!

Thank you. It has been an absolute pleasure and I wish him all the luck in the world.
