Service

We are a Community Special School for pupils with a wide range of learning difficulties and associated special needs. We are very proud of what we can offer at Herons Dale; we have a good range of facilities that help us to fully engage all our pupils in their learning and our children enjoy coming to school. We strive to be flexible in our approach to ensure that we meet the needs of each child.

What we do:

  • Class sizes range from 9-16 pupils and each class is supported by a class teacher and teaching assistants. Visiting specialists support staff with SaLT, OT and Physio provision for pupils who require this input. Please visit our website for further info.
  • Our Vision: Enabling, valuing and empowering all, in our positive, safe and happy school.
  • We aim to provide: Happy days filled with learning; experiences which develop a fit and healthy lifestyle; and relevant, broad, balanced, creative and inclusive curriculums.
  • Opportunities to be part of the community; nurturing relationships; stimulating learning environments.
  • Diverse and personalised approaches to learning; all-encompassing communication; life skills development; encouragement and support to have respect, confidence and resilience.

Our users say:

This school is pretty wonderful really - I feel I have been supported brilliantly in helping my child settle into school and to cope with difficulties going on for my child outside of school, which has been amazing.

This school has been such a godsent, I cannot even express how much my son has progressed there even just in the first week. He went from fully non-verbal to speaking some words and phrases within the first couple of weeks, and his physical skills are now off the charts. Their toilet training is phenomenal, and they approach each child as an individual within all their interactions and care planning. Whenever I communicate any concern to the school, it is taken seriously, and dealt with immediately. I feel listened to and appreciated as the expert on my child's needs. My son loves their facilities, and he runs for the bus every day, excited with anticipation of another school day! :) I cannot recommend the school highly enough. We have seen other schools but the atmosphere in Herons Dale is unlike any other school I have ever seen - it is really friendly, loving and welcoming. It nurtures my son's needs (he is only little and quite delayed so in many ways he's still a baby / toddler that needs to be loved and cuddled), whilst also promoting his independence. He has come on leaps and bounds which is a joy to watch and we can tell that the school has been instrumental in this huge developmental leap. He went from the kid who was always alone at his mainstream nursery, to a really social little boy who has friends now and approaches other children in the playground (!). The staff are amazing at helping these kids thrive and achieve their potential. We truly love Herons Dale.
