Youth Cabinet and Youth MPs, West Sussex
Service
Youth Cabinet is an elected group of young people, who give a voice on issues affecting their lives. They liaise with decision and policy makers, to ensure young peoples’ views are listened to and acted upon.
What we do:
- Elections are held bi-annually, giving a Cabinet of 48 young people in 24 constituencies throughout West Sussex. There are also 4 seats as Youth MPs for UK Youth Parliament and 4 deputies.
- Getting a representative range of candidates is crucial, so outreach work at election time is essential to reach as many young people as possible.
- Young people with disabilities and SEN have a valuable role in this democratic process; ensuring the representation of their peers, ensuring they have a voice and are actively engaged.
- On-going support is provided; face to face, phone, text email and letters as retention of young people is important. Transport and refreshments costs are met, so that this is not a barrier to involvement.
- For the range of Council buildings we use, PEEPS are conducted to make sure young people are able to evacuate safely. For other buildings, we research disability access and will not use venues without adequate accessibility.
Our users say:
“UK Youth Parliament and Youth Cabinet has given me the chance to learn about other campaigns and meet inspirational people. I am now able to promote youth voice and show young people just what we have been able to do for them.” Thomas Eady, 13.
