Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training ASIST (for people working with children and young people in West Sussex)

Event

What is the event?

Eligibility This is a TWO DAY course for people working with children and young people in West Sussex. This course is being delivered through a partnership between Coastal West Sussex Mind, Grassroots Suicide Prevention, West Sussex County Council and West Sussex CCGs.

Aims and Outcomes ASIST 11 (Applied Suicide Intervention Skills Training) was developed by LivingWorks Education. ASIST is for everyone 16 or older—regardless of prior experience—who wants to be able to provide suicide first aid. ASIST 11 teaches participants to: be open, honest and direct about suicide, exercise care in expressing their own values about suicide, do whatever they can to respect a person at risk's decision-making rights, appreciate the importance of letting the person at risk talk about suicide, appreciate that some part of a person at risk wants to live value collaboration with the person at risk, consider things that might threaten the person at risk’s safety, develop a plan that fits the immediate safety needs of the person at risk, and, make sure that the person at risk understands the plan and is committed to carrying it out.

Course Content During the workshop you will have an opportunity to explore any personal or professional experiences with suicide. You will also have space to examine your own attitudes about suicide and people who are at risk of suicide. Space is allowed to focus on how your experiences with suicide impact on your beliefs and attitudes about using suicide first aid and how this in turn impacts on how you undertake suicide interventions. You will also have an opportunity to better understand the needs of a person at risk of suicide and how to use suicide first aid to meet those needs. Some of the learning will take place in the whole group of participants and some in 2 smaller workgroups. You will learn and practice a model of suicide intervention – Pathway for Assisting Life. Your workshop trainers will be available to offer support and will work hard to create a learning atmosphere where participants can also encourage and support each other and have some fun. The course respects and builds on participants previous experience with suicide. However, it may be the case that where people have had very recent experience (e.g. recently bereaved by suicide / attempted suicide in the last 6 months) the course may not be appropriate at this time. In such cases some people choose to wait a while before taking the training. The workshop can be experienced as quite intense and tiring and it is important you try to leave the evenings free to relax. Participants from previous courses have suggested that we let future participants know how tiring the course can be, so please do plan some time for you before and after the course.

Timings and breaks The course runs from 9.00am to 5.00pm on both days. It is essential that you attend both days for the full duration. Please arrive promptly in the morning – we promise to finish on time!
