The Educational Psychology Service

All schools have a named contact Educational Psychologist who will conduct a School and Educational Psychology Planning Meeting. These meetings are held between the Autumn and Spring half terms. Schools are able to discuss either whole school issues or individual pupils, with parental permission. Special schools receive termly planning meetings. Secondary schools and schools with SSCs can be offered a second meeting later in the academic year.**

Further support includes:

• Fortnightly telephone consultation enabling frequent opportunities for schools to access consultation and advice.

• Discussions where a request for an Education, Health and Care Needs Assessment is to be made. A request for this can be made directly to your contact EP.

• Critical incident support to schools following incidents or events which are potentially traumatising and/or upsetting for staff and/or pupils.

• The EPS also supports Portage, a home teaching service for children with complex needs identified before they move into an educational setting and delivers

• Delivery of Earlybird and Earlybird plus, a National Autistic Society accredited training programme for parents whose child has received a diagnosis of an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and is of pre-school age.

EMTAS Training Offer

West Sussex EMTAS (Ethnic Minority & Traveller Achievement Service) are delighted to be offering a new source of advice and support for West Sussex schools in the form of interactive webinars. Each online session will be available for school staff to attend on a specific date. They will then also be made available to watch again online.

Guidance for Teachers Supporting EAL Learners Learning Remotely

The first webinar, ‘Guidance for Teachers Supporting EAL Learners Learning Remotely’, considered:

  • the significant challenges for EAL learners to develop their proficiency in English while learning at home.
  • the resources that can be found within families that can support and enhance learning.
  • how we can adapt the curriculum and curriculum materials to suit EAL learners learning remotely.

How best to support EAL pupils returning to school following the Covid 19 pandemic


The second webinar, ‘How best to support EAL pupils returning to school following the Covid 19 pandemic”, help people to:

  • Understand how the pandemic has affected EAL learners.
  • Consider how to support EAL students returning to school.
  • Develop an awareness of how best to facilitate the transition of EAL learners between key stages in the current climate.


    Sensory Support

    The West Sussex Sensory Support Team works directly with children and their families, pre-schools and schools to support and promote the inclusion of children with sensory needs in a range of settings.

    What we do:

    • Provide direct support to families and children in the Early Years.

    • Liaise with colleagues from Health and Social Care to ensure a joined up approached with parents at the heart of decision making.

    • Support schools by providing specialist advice and direct teaching as appropriate.

    • Provide specialist technologies on an individual basis for curriculum access.

    • Provide specialist advice and reports for Special Educational Needs assessments.
